8 Ways to Reuse a Comforter Bag

If you recently bought a new comforter for your bed or have the plastic casing bed-wear usually comes in, don’t throw it out. Comforter bags are great because they typically have zipper access and are made of durable plastic. Some even come with convenient handles. Here are eight ways to get the most out of a recycled comforter bag. (See also: Waste Not, Want Not: Turning Waste Into Savings)

1. Donation Bag

I have placed an old comforter bag in each of my kids' rooms. Whenever they put on clothing and find it no longer fits comfortably, the kids know to refold the item and put it in the storage bag. This is a great, proactive way for us to avoid having to sort through all of their clothing drawers and closets every few months. When the bag is filled, we zip it up and give it to a family friend for future use. The clear bag makes it easy for them to see the variety of items so they can pull out what they need without a hassle. Thrift stores also appreciate the see-through bag when accepting donations.

2. Winter-Wear Storage

Snowsuits, boots, gloves, hats, and scarves can be stored in the plastic zippered bag, so they are easily located for next winter. Let kids decorate their own bags as an afternoon craft activity. Foam stickers can brighten up a plain plastic bag and give the kids something to do while you spring clean. The plastic bags will also keep dust and moths from attacking your winter gear.

3. Extra Sheet Storage

If you lack closet space and have no room for linens, employ a comforter bag as a storage center for extra sheets and pillow cases. You can fit a lot of sheet sets in one bag, and you’ll protect the sheets from dirt until you need to use them again. As an added benefit, toss in a used fabric softener sheet so you will always have nice, clean, fresh-smelling sheets ready for use.

4. Portable Toy Bag

Kids tend to have a lot of toys that live everywhere but the toy box. You can utilize the giant zippered bags to keep toys organized. The bag allows kids to transport their trucks, dolls, and stuffed animals wherever they want to play. The portable toy bag is also a great way to travel with toys. Kids can easily see what’s in the bag and perhaps resist the urge to dig everything out of the bag and spread it all over the back of your minivan.

5. Gardening Tool Storage

Gardening tools can rust if left out in the elements, but you can use a comforter bag for storage and protection from the rain and other seasonal elements. The bag also makes it easier for you to lug everything around the garden, and it can be quickly rinsed out with the hose when it gets too dirty.

6. Cleaning Catchall

Again, due to the ability to see through the clear plastic, a comfortable bag is useful as a catchall in your living space. Clutter that traditionally lies around your house can be tossed in the bag until it can be sorted later. Your family members can easily see what’s inside when they are looking for something specific and can grab their own items when it’s time to put things back in their rightful places.

7. Luggage

While it is hardly a fashion statement, the large plastic zippered bag can work well as last-minute luggage for your next road trip. Your family is likely to forget a lot of stuff on the way out the door, so you can utilize the bag as a last-minute catchall for travel. On the return trip, be sure to pack your dirty laundry in the bag so you can put it in the laundry room as soon as you get back and not have to sort through suitcases trying to figure out what is clean and what isn’t.

8. Shoe Storage

If shoes tend to clutter your home or your closet, consider using the bag as a shoe storage place. You can throw in your flip flops, sneakers, and other casual shoes to make room for the pricier dress shoes that need more tender loving care. The bag makes it easy to collect your shoes in one place if you are short on room.

There are probably tons more ideas you can think up for recycling household items that would otherwise go in the trash bin. While you may only buy a new comforter from time to time, you can start asking friends and family to save theirs for you and gather a whole collection of free bags for your storage needs.

ShareThis

Written by Tisha Tolar and published on Wise Bread.
How to Save Money on Patio Furniture

If you are anything like me, you tend to live outside during the warm summer months. Due to my affinity for sunshine and summer breezes, it is important to me that my patio becomes an extension of my living room during the summertime. Since we now have a pool, we spend even more time sitting outside, relaxing, working, or hanging out with family and friends.

I am not always able to create the most luxurious outdoor environment, but I have been working on perfecting my ability to create a comfortable outdoor living space that falls within my budget.

Here are some tips so you too can afford the outdoor furniture you’d like to have for summer. (See also: 50+ Ways to Have Free Outdoor Fun)

Try Layaway

There are still a handful of stores that offer layaway, including Kmart and Sears, which both sell a nice selection of patio furniture. If you are looking to buy a quality set of matching furniture, you can make it more affordable by paying it off a little bit at a time over a period of eight weeks rather than racking up new charges on your credit card or waiting to save up for the purchase.

Go Piece by Piece

If you can look beyond the notion of having a perfectly matching six-piece patio set, you can likely find several decent pieces and buy them one at a time. Look in different locations for the type of patio furniture you want, but don’t go for a complete set. You can add to your collection as you can afford it.

Buy Used

There are many used furniture stores and thrift shops that carry patio furniture. You can also get lucky at private yard sales or estate sales. Check out online or newspaper classifieds too. People who upgrade their own patio furniture will tend to sell their old set because they have no storage room and would like to make a little money back towards the purchase of the new stuff.

Check Out Discount Stores

There are many discount stores that specialize in buying unsold merchandise and reselling to the public for steep discounts. Keep an eye on store flyers or check out the store websites to see what’s new. The downside to this shopping method is that you never know when or where you’ll find something you love. Start putting some extra cash to the side as you do your search so when you find something you love, you can pay cash in full and beat other shoppers to the deal.

Upgrade Existing Furniture

Perhaps you are looking for new patio furniture only because you are sick of looking at the same thing you’ve had for years. If your current patio set is still in relatively good condition, consider giving it a new coat of paint, new cushions, or some other upgrade. You can save a lot of money by working with what you already have. With the popularity of do-it-yourself television shows and all the creative refurbishing resources out there, you should have no problem finding ways to spruce up your existing furniture.

How to Save on Summer Garden Flowers

With nicer weather approaching and the promise of summer on the horizon, many are thinking about gardening in the near future. While there are plenty of nicely grown, easy-to-transplant flower pallets waiting at the local home improvement stores and nurseries, buying in bulk can get expensive. But you can work wonders with a variety of plants and flowers without blowing your tight budget. Here are some easy ways to still make your garden pretty without spending a fortune. (See also: Garden Ideas for Small Spaces)

Grow Your Own

Seed packets are inexpensive, as is the potting soil you need to start your own seedlings. You should start planting seeds early and keep them well-watered in a sunlit place inside your home to promote growth. There are lots of free resources online to show you how to plant at home successfully, and you can save a lot of cash and still get all the flowers you need for a fraction of the cost. Use recycled milk jugs to start your plants, so you don’t have to spend more money on excess gardening supplies.

Think Perennials

Perennials will come back year after year if cared for properly. You can purchase lovely perennial bulbs just about anywhere these days, including dollar stores. The good thing about perennials is that you do the work once, and the plants require only maintenance from there on out.

Borrow From Family

Many flowers and other plants are able to be shared. If you admire plants and flowers from your friends, family, and even the neighbors, ask if they would share some with you. Plant roots like hosta or Rose of Sharon can be separated and replanted successfully.

Check Out the Farmers Markets

There are many working farms that grow things other than produce in order to increase profitability. Many will sell trays of great-looking flower varieties at a fraction of the cost you’d find in retail locations. You can find a large selection of annual and perennial plants and flowers in season at your local farmers market.

Remember that outdoor flowers and plants require care and maintenance. If you want your garden to look good, be sure to keep it free of weeds and properly watered so the plants will look healthy and vibrant. Do your research about which flowers are best for your location based on the seasons. If you organize your garden properly, you’ll be able to have in-season blooms throughout the spring, summer, and fall without spending a fortune.

6 Awesome Reasons to Shop at Aldi

Since the price of groceries has been steadily rising and my only local grocery store went bankrupt, I have been trying better food budgeting with a monthly trip to Aldi for the essentials. My grandmother was always a big proponent of Aldi, but that was back in the day before the retail chain really stepped up their game.

As a frequent Aldi shopper, I have discovered that the years have been kind, and the store has really become an asset to our small area where unemployment rates are high and dollar stores are seeing more business than ever. If you have never shopped at an Aldi, I want to provide you some incentive by listing the things I love about the discount store and its offerings, as well as a few minor complaints about the store I frequent. (See also: 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi)

Six Great Reasons to Shop at Aldi

The discount grocery chain has really come a long way over the years. As a frequent shopper, I have taste-tested many of the Aldi-brand products and can say that most are just as good or even better than their name-brand counterparts. Here are six of the top reasons you should consider shopping at the Aldi store near you (if you are lucky enough to have one).

Tasty Stuff

I’ll be the first to admit I previously tended to shop brand-name because I was picky about how generic products tasted in comparison. The good news is that the items I now buy at Aldi taste just as good, and even better, than the more-expensive brand-name counterparts. I address the items I do not like in the next section, but overall I find that I prefer the Aldi brand to other brands. The caramel-filled ice cream cones are to die for, and I can’t buy them anywhere else!

Good, Small Selection

While it is true you don’t have a whole lot of choices when you shop Aldi, I find that the variety of items you can get at Aldi is great. I think I actually like not having to choose spaghetti sauces from 42 different companies. Aldi sells one brand of sauce but in a variety of flavors. I especially like the frozen section, which often features different products, so I get to see new items every time I go. I know I can always get my staples, but I also get to look forward to what’s new.

Great Prices

I did a relatively informal price comparison between the local Walmart and Aldi. I can get two times the amount of stuff at Aldi at the same price I could from Walmart, and three times as much stuff when compared to the local grocery store chains. We have left Aldi with an overflowing cart full of stuff for just under $200, which I know I can never do at any other store. I think the best example of the savings potential lies in the Aldi cereal aisle. Even my two tween girls who are obsessed with brand names and image largely prefer the $1.99 box of Aldi brand cereal to the $4.99 name brand box in the grocery store. Most of the popular cereal types are available under the Aldi brand, and I can buy five boxes at Aldi compared to one or two boxes from the grocery store. No one in our household can taste the difference.

Online Shopping List

The Aldi website offers weekly flyer information concerning its in-store sales. The cool part is you can add merchandise to your shopping list straight from the flyer. You can save a lot of time creating this list and learning about the deals. Simply print the list and take it with you when you shop.

More Earth-Friendly

If you have not shopped at Aldi, you may be surprised to find you have to bring your own bags and pack up your own goods. We have increased our reusable bag cache and now use those bags for many other things rather than create new waste.

No Distractions

On a personal level, it helps that Aldi primarily sells food items, with only part of one aisle devoted to miscellaneous items that can range from toys to clothes to exercise equipment. I am better equipped to deal with temptations and avoid impulse buys on my Aldi shopping excursions.

Three Not-So-Great Things About Aldi

As with most things in life, with the good comes the bad. There are a few things I find frustrating about the Aldi experience, but nothing so insurmountable that would keep me from shopping there regularly.

Bad Produce

It is possible this is only relevant in my local store, but I have found time and time again that if I purchase produce from Aldi I will need to use it right away, or it will go bad within a day. We avoid buying produce there and tend to visit the weekly farmers market in our community, so overall it is still a win-win situation.

The Un-Tasty Stuff

There are a handful of items that I thoroughly dislike from the Aldi brand. Hot dogs are at the top of the list, followed by the refrigerated coffee creamer and the canned soup. There were a few frozen side dishes and entrees that left a bad taste in my mouth too. However, I have done enough taste-testing to know what I like and what I don’t. Plus, Aldi offers a double 100% guarantee. If you don’t like something, they’ll replace the product and give you your money back.

The Drive

This is more of a personal problem, but it completes my list. I have to drive nearly 35 minutes to get to the nearest Aldi, which is why I only go once a month. It does take extra gas to get there, but I feel it is worth it. The downside to the long drive is that when we run out of stuff, we have to wait until a trip is worthwhile, although in the long run this likely saves me more grocery money each month because it forces me to better plan my shopping list for a month’s worth of supplies.

How to Allocate Your Cash When You Are Broke

There are many reasons why you might have a serious lack of cash, and it can seem impossible to budget the little bit of money you have on hand. Of course, the obvious question is "How did I get in this mess in the first place?" and the answer is usually due to a lack of smart budgeting. But since we can’t go back and change the past, all we can do is look towards the future and try to do better with our money management.

Here are some tips for surviving life when you are cash-strapped or flat broke. (See also: Emergency Belt-Tightening)

Don’t Stay Silent

It won’t take long until your creditors come calling. The worst thing you can do is ignore those calls, and the best thing you can do is take control of the situation, no matter how out of control you feel. Ask your creditors upfront for a payment extension or an alternative payment plan on a temporarily basis until you can recover from your financial hardship.

Prioritize the Money You Do Have

If you find you are falling a few hundred dollars short of your monthly financial obligations, sit down and prioritize the bills you need to pay such as your mortgage, electricity, and insurance payments. The other bills can wait until you free up more cash. You want to make sure you keep your home and have the basic utilities you need to survive. Again, speaking to your individual creditors can also help you extend payments without serious consequences and assure your creditors you are doing your best to get back on track.

Interrupt Your Savings Plan...for Now

If you have been contributing to a savings account, it would be wise to put that money to better use. Otherwise you will find that in order to save your typical $50 a week, you will need to pay a few hundred dollars in overdraft bank fees, credit card interest rates, and other fees for making late payments or missing them entirely.

Don’t Live on Credit

A big mistake people make when they are short on cash is to use their credit cards like they would their paycheck. They are quick to spend on credit because it is available, but they fail to see the long term impact these purchases will have on their financial life. The golden rule of credit card use is that you should only spend on credit what you have in cash reserves. Since you have no cash, you're likely to end up racking up even more debts you can’t afford.

Add to Your Income

If you do not foresee an end to your budget crisis in the immediate future, you should start to take action now to find ways to boost your income. Depending on the reason for your financial hardship, you may need to find a second job and bring in another paycheck. You may also want to consider working overtime when you can or offloading some of the stuff around your home through a yard sale or online auction. The faster you can regain your financial ground, the less expensive this period will be for you in the long run.

Get Cracking on a New Budget

While the last thing you may want to do is deal with your money issues, now is the time to construct a better, more viable budget to prevent this from happening again. Even if this current financial hardship was due to unforeseen circumstances (such as a medical emergency or job loss) you should make a plan to be better prepared for such instances in the future. Boost your income and your savings goals, and learn new tricks to start living below your means.

It will take some sacrifices to survive a period of being broke, but the only way to assure you will get ahead of the game is if you commit to better money management and work as hard as you can to get back into the black. If you fall into despair and just avoid the situation altogether, you must know that things will only get worse. The longer you take to act, the longer it will take you to recover financially.

How to Organize Your Pantry and Save Cash

The cost of groceries is increasing, and many consumers are on the hunt for better, more efficient ways to save and cut down on their monthly food expenses. While researching sales between retailers and clipping coupons can certainly help, there is a good chance you’ll get the most savings by first clearing out your current food pantry and cabinets.

Too often consumers with disorganized cabinets and pantries overspend simply because they can’t find anything. They buy excess amounts of stuff they already have. Here are some organization tips that everyone should use to sort out the pantry and make you more effective at grocery shopping. (See also: How to Grocery Shop for Five on $100 a Week)

Hunt and Gather

Start by clearing your kitchen table, then opening all of your food cabinets and removing everything from the shelves. As you remove items, try grouping them on the table in categories such as baking supplies, soups, and condiments.

Check the Dates

Keep a trash bag and an empty box nearby. As you remove items, check expiration dates and toss the bad stuff. When you find items you know you will never use, put them in a donation box, provided you have never opened/used the items. This box can later go to a local food pantry, soup kitchen, or church organization.

Clean Effectively

Since your food pantry and cabinets likely do not get cleaned weekly, make the most of the empty shelves. Clean and disinfect them thoroughly. Add some grip liner to keep items in place after the space has adequate time to dry.

Make an Inventory

With everything spread out before you, consider the pantry priorities. The things you use most should be placed at a convenient location so you can see immediately when you are running low.

Label Shelving

If you are not living the single life and fear others will mess up your organization efforts, use a labeler or colored tape to designate where things can go. Make categories somewhat generic such as condiments or snacks so as not to micro-organize yourself out of space.

Eliminate the Mess

If you store bags of sugar, sacks of flour, and boxes of cereal, invest in some air-tight canisters. Not only will they help in organization and space-saving, you will also help eliminate the attraction of pests. Don’t forget to purchase containers that are in line with the height and width of your shelving space.

Tier It Up

In order to make it easier to see in the back of the cabinets that go three or four rows deep, insert scrap wood or other items from your home that could serve as tiers, boosting the height of the canned goods and other items in the back row, so you can see everything easily at one time without having to rifle through the rows of items.

Restock Wisely

Extra grocery items should be stored up and out of the way. Make a list of how many extra jars of peanut butter you have found. By recording the extras and taping the list inside the pantry door, you’ll know right away if you have something you need, even if you can’t see it right away. Similarly, if you purchase items in bulk, consider another storage area that is out of the way so your pantry is less cluttered and easier to manage.

Spices and smaller items can be stored in a plastic tote or basket so you can remove the whole thing when you need something.

Also, consider putting items in categories by expiration dates. Put stuff you need to use first in the front, so you can stop having to toss food out after it expires.

Install a Dry Erase Board

Pick up a dry erase board at the dollar store, and install it inside the pantry or on the back of the cabinet door. When you take the last of something, make a note of it so you can keep your grocery list more accurate, and likely shorter.

Going forward, your pantry and your refrigerator should ideally be free of clutter, kept clean, and regularly organized so that any time you need to, you can glance at the shelves and know immediately what you need and what you don’t.

And don’t forget to drop off that donation box at the local food pantry or soup kitchen. What you don’t use or don’t like will be appreciated by those who receive it.

4 Ways the Internet Is Hurting Your Finances

Consumers can find a lot of places to put the blame for an ongoing bad financial situation, but not all are brave enough to point the finger at themselves. While the Internet does have the resources to help you fill in some blanks on money management, it can also be part of the reason you are not handling your finances as efficiently as you should be. Here are four ways the Internet can hurt your overall financial stability. (See also: Are Your Finances Fragile?)

1. Procrastination

Researchers have estimated that adults spend, on average, five hours a day surfing the web. This is five hours people could be using for other things, like updating their filing, reconciling a checkbook, or checking credit scores. Procrastination is often disguised by other excuses like "I’m too busy" and "I just don’t have the time to keep up." Excuses are a part of the procrastination package. Sure, it’s good to check your accounts online, but updating your Facebook with exciting hour-by-hour tidbits of your life when your financial house is in disorder may signal the need for reprioritizing your life.

2. Social Media Brags

Speaking of Facebook, you may not truly realize how your social media posts are affecting your money matters. Everyone from lenders to bill collectors are using popular social media sites to see what you are up to these days, especially if you’ve been hard to track down otherwise. Social media pages can reveal a lot about you to a lender and potential employers, so it is very wise to think before you type. If you are running late with bill payments but bragging about the new living room set you just paid $2,000 for, collection efforts may get a lot more aggressive. Don’t be fooled by privacy settings you think will actually keep the world out of your business. People seeking information about you have a lot of resources these days.

3. Information Overload

Consumers who are perplexed by their own financial situation may turn to the Internet to get advice. While there is a ton of excellent, free information online that can make a difference in your money-management habits, since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, all this information can create a totally overwhelming situation and open the door, once again, for procrastinating.

If you can fine-tune your research to specific topics within the personal finance world, though, you can find helpful information to use as a guide. Find a few reputable websites that cover the topics you feel you want to learn more about. Read a few posts to find a site with a style that suits your needs. You can also remove the Internet from the equation for awhile and take a course on personal finance basics, so you have the fundamentals to keep yourself on track. If there are no courses offered locally, consider meeting with a debt counselor to sort out your basic money management issues.

4. Impulse Buying

There are bargains galore on nearly any retail site you come across. The deals may be great, but these opportunities are often too hard to resist, leading consumers into impulse decisions and knee-jerk spending. While those new handbags or exclusive tool sets may be on clearance for a limited time only, the reality is you probably do not need them, can’t afford them, or do not have the fortitude to close the window fast enough. Impulsive spending from the comfort of your own home is far too convenient — even if your budget says no, and even if you are already being swallowed by debt problems.

The Internet can be a great go-to place for tips and information, but it is up to you to police your own Internet use in relation to your money matters. There is no technology that will perfect your financial stability without 100% participation from you.

Upgrade Your Home Decor for Less

On our road to a life of frugality, there are many things we tend to ignore and go without in order to keep making ends meet. One area that we often neglect in order to keep the bills paid and food on the table is the interior of our homes. We may like to watch home makeover shows, but are resistant to actually working on our own homes.

Avocado appliances and ugly wallpaper patterns of yesteryear may seem like mainstays, but even if you don’t have a ton of spare cash lying around, there are still economical ways to update your home's look. Here are some tips for creating an updated look for your home without breaking your budget. (See also: 15 Home Decorating Ideas for Under $5)

Change the Wallpaper

A gallon or two of paint may be acceptable to your wallet, but if you want to update your home’s look with high-quality wallpaper, it can be harder to justify the cost. The way to still add style without overspending is to find a fabric mill that makes the wallpaper. These mills will typically offer wallpaper of all kinds for 40-50% off the wholesale price. Discontinued patterns from retailers may also be an option if you are willing to be more open-minded about the kind of paper or style you want.

You can also save yourself a lot of time if you can learn how to hang the paper yourself. Check with your local home improvement store to see if they offer DIY classes to get you started.

Upgrade Your Floors

There are many user-friendly options when it comes to flooring choices. Check first with flooring wholesalers by calling them directly to inquire about deals. Many wholesale companies also have websites that offer limited-time deals, especially when the amount of flooring you need is greater than 1,000 square feet.

If you are looking for carpeting, check with local carpet and home improvement stores for discounted or unwanted carpeting that is already cut. Several discount stores also offer great deals on carpeting. It may be difficult to get carpeting from such locations if you have an odd-sized room, but it can pay off to look or call around for the dimensions you need. If you are looking for throw rugs, keep in mind that those you find in retail stores are typically marked up as much as 600%, so consider shopping at second-hand or discount stores to score some more affordable ones.

Replace the Old Appliances

The first place you should look when considering new appliances is the clearance aisles at home improvement stores. You might not have a large number of options, but you can certainly find a deal on unused-but-returned items. If you keep coming back, you are likely to find at least one appliance you’ve been looking for, and you may be able to update all of your appliances for well below regular cost.

Another good idea is find a contractor you know and ask where they get their appliances. If they can recommend a good wholesale location, you may be able to get exactly what you are looking for at a reasonable price. Don’t discount second-hand shops either. There are many reasons why people get rid of items, and you might be able to find a diamond in the rough — or at least something more updated and more energy-efficient than what you currently have in your home.

Update Your Curtains

A few simple curtain and drapery changes can make a whole room look updated. Check online at sites like eBay for draperies and curtains. There are plenty of people who have buyer's remorse when it comes to these items, and they are apt to resell plenty that are still in the packages. In other scenarios, consumers make mistakes in sizing or colors and don’t feel like returning them to the store. You may find exactly what you are looking for, or even new ideas.

When it comes to updating a home, remember that the little changes can often make a big change too, so keep your eyes out for picture frames and other wall hangings that go on clearance throughout the year. But the most important advice of all is to, sit down and establish a budget for yourself so you’ll know exactly how much you can spend before you even make your first purchase. Once you get into the process of updating, it can be easy to get carried away. Establish your budget early on so you can be sure you can afford the upgrades and not have to rely on extended credit to cover your project costs. Work towards paying in cash for your purchases, and you’ll likely enjoy the completed makeover way more than if you get inundated with bills each month.

Tips for Accomplishing More in a Day

Take a look online, and you’ll no doubt find a gazillion methods for staying on task and getting things done. Many methodologies are available but accompanied by a price tag. From affordable e-books to costly professional help, there are a lot of options for getting more done.

Beyond the obvious problem of not getting things done, wasting time goes hand in hand with wasting money. If you are not making the most of your time, you are likely in a rush. Being in a hurry generally translates to making financial mistakes. If you are not planning out a chunk of time to take care of bills and balance the checkbook, your finances can go downhill fast.

For consumers who are busy, there is a tendency to look for the "easy button," no matter what the price. However, there is no need to spend a small fortune to get yourself in gear and actually accomplish what you set out to do in a day. Here is some free advice for getting more done without forking over the cash. (See also: 10 Ways to Save Time by Spending Time)

Preplan in the Evenings

A written visual of all you need to do is the core of getting things done. Commit to sitting down for at least 20-30 minutes each evening with a blank sheet of paper and list all of the things you need to get done the following day. Transfer tasks to a daily planner sheet, allocating times for each task. This will allow you to clearly see what you can expect to complete during the hours you are awake.

Break It Down

For the big jobs you face, create an outline that breaks down tasks involved in getting the job done. For instance, cleaning out the garage involves many tasks that can be done over time and still result in one larger, accomplished goal.

Stop the Distractions

During those blocks of time you have scheduled for certain tasks that need your undivided attention, including those at work, stop the distractions in their tracks by turning off your cell phone, avoiding email, and asking unexpected visitors to your home or your desk to come back at a more convenient time for you. If your goal is to accomplish more in a day, you have to stick to your guns about interruptions and your desire to stay focused.

Use a Timer

You can use your cell phone, set the timer on the microwave, or buy a portable timer and literally set time limitations on the tasks you need to do. The time may serve as a strong motivator to get moving and not sit down for "just a minute" while you are in the middle of a job. Timers are also a great introduction for teaching children time management skills.

Get Others Involved

When you take on more than is necessary, it is no surprise you can’t handle the load. Learn to ask for help on the job. At home, hash out responsibilities to family members by creating a visual chart of responsibilities you can no longer handle on your own. For everything else, learn to say no when you are short on time.

Expect the Unexpected

Realize from the get-go that no matter how well you plan, things will not always go as envisioned. Don’t let that ruin your day or your motivation. Remember to stay flexible but focused and find ways to work around the unexpected.

Time management does not come naturally to many people and efforts need to be made to ensure you stay organized and acknowledge just how much you can actually accomplish in a period of one day. Having too many unrealistic expectations of yourself gets old fast and probably won’t produce the desired results.

Creating Cheap, Healthy Work Lunches

One basic money-saving tip consumers often fail at is brown-bagging at work each day to spare the excessive expenses of lunch on the go. The reason why so many fail is because of the perceived boredom that comes with soggy sandwiches or boring raw vegetables — the mainstays of packed lunches.

The good news is that it is possible to bring tastebud-tempting treats from home to the office. All you have to do is think outside of the lunchbox. Here are some simple tips to help you drop the blah tuna and add some quality to your lunch hour. (See also: Sex Up Your Sandwich: Ideas for Budget-Conscious Brown Baggers)

Think Protein

Lunchmeat can only take you so far. Consider other healthy foods that will give you energy and keep your taste buds happy. Instead of boring sandwiches, think about yogurt, nuts, eggs, and fish as good alternatives to the bologna. The Internet has plenty of free resources (like this appetizer and snack section on All Recipes) where recipes are easy to follow and simple to print to meet individual food requirements and likes.

Spice Up Last Night’s Dinner

If you traditionally have leftovers from family dinners, think about ways to add to them and create a whole new lunch idea. Add some brown rice to leftover mixed vegetables, toss in some cut up chicken, and add a fun sauce to the mix. Not only is lunch easy to prepare for the next day, but your refrigerator is not going to be crammed with wasted, spoiled food.

Have a Work Pantry

Whether you trust your lunch essentials to the public coworker lunch space or you need to hide your stash in your desk drawer, keeping a few supplies on hand for lunchtime can make packing from home even easier. A few starter items such as salt, pepper, spice grinders, vinaigrette, and multigrain crackers can go a long way to making a lunch taste great. Healthy munchies kept in your desk drawer can help you resist unhealthy vending machine temptations.

Set the Table

Stop eating out of leftover Chinese takeout containers and plastic baggies. They can take the enjoyment out of eating and make you feel stuck in the same old boring rut. Instead, pack culinary supplies for the office including a dinner plate and silverware to use during lunch time meals. It can also help to keep on hand a vegetable peeler, paring knives, a small cutting board, and a travel sized dish soap and sponge for easy clean ups. Having such supplies on hand at the office makes it easier to prepare fresh produce and cheeses at work when you're in a hurry and have no time to prepare your take-along lunch at home.

Save Up to Splurge

By using coupons and fresh ingredients, you will begin to save cash on your lunchtime grocery purchases. Make a plan to tuck away a few bucks of that savings into a separate envelope so that once a month you can join your co-workers out on the town for a tasty social lunch — that is, if you want to forgo your new lunch ideas.

How to Clean Your Dishwasher

I was in the grocery store the other day when I noticed a cleaning product recommended to keep dishwashers "clean" and running smoothly. I have to admit that I only recently had the privilege of having a dishwasher in my kitchen. Most of my life, I was the dishwasher, and I was really not up to speed on maintaining the appliance. I presumed that as the dishes were cleaned with detergent and water, so too was my dishwasher.

Doing some research, I realized that I didn’t need the high-priced solution intended to prevent my dishwasher from breaking down. I did, however, need to do a few extra bits of cleaning to make sure I maintained my new-to-me appliance. (See also: 8 Tasks You Shouldn't Skip During Spring Cleaning)

Remove the Food

Consider the condition of the dishes and silverware you put in your dishwasher each day. While it is highly recommended that you first scrape plates to prevent leftovers from going in the dishwasher, most dishwasher owners are guilty of not being as thorough as they could be. As a result, food particles and other materials get caught up in the drainage system of the dishwasher, causing blockage of water and ultimately leading to the demise of your appliance.

Clean Seals

Seals that prevent your dishwasher from leaking water all over your kitchen floor tend to break down over time. One of the main reasons this breakdown occurs is due to the bleaching ingredients contained in most dishwasher gels. For this reason, it is wise to use powdered detergent to protect the life of your dishwasher components. You can help prevent breakdown also by regularly cleaning seals around the door with a toothbrush and hot, soapy water. The toothbrush will help reach the small areas sponges will not. Around the seal and the drain are areas particularly susceptible to buildup of damaging debris.

Clean the Drain

You’ll need to remove the bottom rack of your dishwasher to access the drain. First, check for any obvious blockage and remove it. Then use a clean sponge to wipe around the drain area.

Add Vinegar

Add a cup of white vinegar to the empty dishwasher. Run the dishwasher on the hottest water setting possible. The vinegar will help remove the debris and grease left inside the appliance. It also has the added benefit of removing the musty, mildewy smell from inside the dishwasher.

Add Baking Soda

After using the vinegar to sanitize the inside of the dishwasher, you can also sprinkle baking soda on the base of the dishwasher and run the hottest cycle once again. The baking soda will help freshen the smell of the dishwasher as well as brighten up the look of the inside of your appliance by removing stains.

Incorporate this dishwasher maintenance into your regular heavy-duty cleaning schedule to avoid high-cost repairs and not have to worry about having a dirty, foul-smelling dishwasher in your kitchen.

How to Quit Your Job

Quitting your job can either be the greatest day of your life or the most nerve-wracking event you have had to face. Whatever emotional roller coaster you are riding, there are certain rules of etiquette you need to adhere to in order to not burn any proverbial bridges that can ultimately affect your future employment opportunities.

Ideally, one of the most important considerations you need to make when you plan to quit your job concerns what your next move will be. If you are quitting your job because you are dissatisfied with your position, your employer, or issues with co-workers, consider what your Plan B will be. If you quit without thinking, you may be jeopardizing your financial stability, not to mention your ability to get a new job.

Here are some basic guidelines to follow in order to walk away from your current employer with dignity. (See also: 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks)

Give Adequate Warning

As soon as you are confident that you are going to quit your job, provide your employer with adequate notice. Most employers have specific protocol outlined in their employee handbook that dictates how long in advance you need to file your notice of resignation. Use the guidelines, but still provide as much advance notice as possible. While you may not feel obligated to help an employer that you are leaving, it is the ethical thing to do and is, in essence, part of your job duties.

Provide Notice Professionally

While there may be situations that necessitate an employee walking into a supervisor’s office and yelling "I quit!," it is in your best interest to type up a formal notification of your decision to quit your position. Date the letter and, in a professional tone, outline your intention to leave your employment, noting the date you intend to leave. Keep a copy of the note for your files and hand-deliver it to your immediate supervisor or other management personnel as dictated in your employee handbook.

Don’t Tell Lies

It is important for you to be upfront about your intentions to leave your job. Your supervisor may ask what your future plans are, and you are not obligated to divulge specific information if you do not want to do so. However, you can let them know the reasons you are moving on such as a better opportunity, more money, or shorter commute. Depending on your relationship with your employer, you should reveal what feels comfortable. If you have signed a non-compete agreement and your new position will violate that agreement, you may face legal issues with your soon-to-be former employer. Don’t lie just to keep yourself out of trouble.

Remain Professional

Networking is one of the most important factors in the business world. Whether you are turning to entrepreneurial pursuits or heading off to another large corporation, who you know can make a difference. If you burn your bridges with colleagues and supervisors, there may come a time later when you could benefit professionally from such contacts. Maintain your professionalism throughout the rest of your employment. Your ability to remain professional will also likely benefit you should you need professional references for future employment. Don’t slack on the job just because you don’t plan to stay long. Your productivity and on-the-job performance may be reported to your next employer through your professional references.

Meet With Human Resources

Some companies have additional steps required of each departing employee, including exit interviews and the like. If these final steps are not completed, it can delay your last paycheck. Check in with human resources to be sure you have attended to the necessary details. You also will need to clarify matters such as how to roll over your 401(k) or 403(b) and what you need to do with your health insurance coverage.

Take Only What’s Yours

When you finally are ready to leave your post, take only the belongings that are yours and leave company property where it belongs. It can create a conflict of interest or even a bad taste in the mouth of your former employer to find you have absconded with office supplies, computer software, or other company belongings. Some companies will go so far as taking legal action, so only take what is yours rather than risk ruining your reputation.

Be Courteous to the Next Guy/Gal in Line

Any kind of insider information about your job specifics would probably be appreciated by the next hire. Leaving behind an organized, detailed list of must-knows is not required but would be a professional courtesy. From computer passwords to filing codes, any related information left behind can make the transition easier.

Leaving your job may be a whirlwind time, but use good judgment and keep things positive as you move onto the next phase of your career.

It is a job no one likes to do — especially in my house — but with the price of groceries steadily rising, cleaning your refrigerator needs to be a weekly task to prevent food from going to waste. (See also: Household Cleaning Hacks That Save You Money)

When refrigerators are messy and remain unclean for a long period of time, two things are going to happen:

Leftovers get pushed further to the back each day and are forgotten about quickly.

Smells and food gases can ruin otherwise good food by making it taste funny or outright causing spoilage.

Here are some tips for keeping your fridge a priority in your weekly cleaning schedule.

Start Heavy

It likely will take one good cleaning to get you back on track for an effective maintenance schedule. Take a few hours of a weekend, and then commit to one weekend every month to ensure the refrigerator is in good condition. Remember that regular cleaning will help extend the life of your appliance and keep repair and replacement costs down.

Get Everything Out

Remove every object residing in the refrigerator. If you don’t have enough counter space, use cardboard boxes to house your foods until the cleaning job is done. Next, remove all racks and drawers. You can place them outside near the hose, or in a bathtub or utility tub. Spray shelving with a bleach solution, or a natural cleaner if you prefer, that will disinfect and sanitize the components of the refrigerator.

Sanitize

Use a bucket containing half bleach and half hot water, and a clean sponge. Start at the top of the refrigerator and scrub all of the walls, ceiling, and remaining shelving. You can use an old toothbrush to get into the hard-to-reach areas. You will need to pick up debris with a paper towel, then repeat the washing process to ensure the interior space is clean. You can then wipe down the entire inside with a clean cloth and warm water, especially any components that are rubber or soft plastic (bleach can cause the disintegration of these materials). The bleach is necessary because the dampness of the refrigerator’s interior can cause the growth of mold and mildew. After the interior of the refrigerator is cleaned, tackle the shelves and racks in the same way. Once they have been cleaned, rinsed, and dried, place them back into the refrigerator.

Sort and Organize

Clean out your bucket, add fresh hot water, and get a new sponge or cloth. Start sorting the items you took out of your refrigerator. Select the jars and other objects that go back on the door shelves. Clean each bottle and jar off with a damp cloth before putting it back in the refrigerator, checking dates of expiration as you go. Toss all expired foods and group similar items together. This will help you know exactly what you have on hand and what you need to purchase from the store. Many times consumers overspend at the grocery store on supplies they already have.

Add Baking Soda

Baking soda is cheap and very effective at eliminating odors in the refrigerator and freezer. Put a baking soda box in the back of the refrigerator in a place less likely to be disturbed daily to prevent spillage. Replace the box every 30 days, and write the date you added it to the fridge on the box to help you remember. Add a note on the calendar too.

Develop a System

In order to keep up with refrigerator maintenance, arm your pantry with some necessary items including freezer bags, permanent markers, and more baking soda. As you add food back to the refrigerator, mark the date you made it and what it is, if necessary. Select one day each week when the refrigerator should be cleaned. It may be ideal to select the day before garbage is collected so the expired food doesn’t sit around the house for long. When that day comes, reorganize food items and throw out spoiled leftovers. Use a pre-moistened cleaning wipe to tackle spills and wipe down exposed areas weekly.

Buy Only What You Need

At the grocery store, buy only what your family can eat within the week, unless you can freeze it. The less you buy, the less chance the food will go to waste. You should get a basic idea of how much your family eats and what is left over after a typical seven-day time period. Use the information to shop accordingly. You’ll save not only money, but also the frustration of seeing wasted food being dumped into the trash week after week.

Paper Checks: Going, Going...Gone?

Many Americans still retain a checking account for the purpose of writing actual paper checks. Consumers continue to use paper checks out of habit, convenience, security, or having no other option with a vendor. But there are big changes on the horizon that may cancel the use of personal checks or paper checks in general. Are you ready to go paperless? (See also: Why I Still Write Paper Checks)

Who’s Changing and Why?

Many creditors, lenders, utility services, and even federal and state government agencies are shying away from issuing or receiving paper checks. For instance, those who receive child support payments now do so through a debit card and direct deposits. Banks and other vendors are offering incentives for customers to go electronic. Paper statements and paper checks are becoming a thing of the past.

The move to electronic payments and direct deposits essentially all comes down to the cost factor. In order to save money and cut expenses, state and federal agencies especially are making the switch. There is more cooperation between banks and government agencies to keep programs moving forward and organized.

While some feel the move is not such a great idea, there are benefits for both sides. Vendors benefit because their overhead is lowered. For consumers, the receipt of child support payments or unemployment benefits is seamless. No more waiting for the mailman or worrying over lost or stolen checks. Payments are now being made via direct deposit onto a debit card issued by the agency responsible for payment. For each payment, cards are reloaded automatically.

What to Watch For

While cost and convenience are certainly pluses to both vendors and consumers, this changes the rules. Without understanding the changes, consumers will likely end up making mistakes that will cost them cash because they didn’t know any better. Here are some essential things you need to know about going electronic:

Unexpected Fees

Most governmental agencies do not charge a fee for money being reloaded onto a card. This may be the case now but not always. In the case where you receive a refund or a rebate from a retail store or other entity, funds issued through a debit/credit card may not be fee-free. You may have to pay fees for each transaction you make or for reloading a card with new funds. There may also be additional fees for use at an ATM or for maintaining an inactive card. Check with the terms and conditions of the card in refund situations. It may be better to ask for a store credit rather than getting stuck with fees and losing your access to the full amount you are owed.

Balance Checks

With some cards you may incur a fee for using your card in any capacity at an ATM, including for a simple balance transfer. Find out if you are going to be charged for balance checks done over the phone or the Internet. If fees are incurred, it would be smart to keep tabs on your expenditures on a piece of paper rather than lose cash to a series of fees. This is also key because if you go over the amount of funds on the card when making a purchase, your card will either be declined or you’ll be hit with a pretty significant overdraft fee for each transaction you make over your limit. Not only will you be out of funds, you’ll be responsible for paying the overage charges.

Keeping Your Card Safe

While a plastic card may be much more convenient than a paper check, there is still a risk of having it stolen or losing it. A lost card may cost you up to $25 to replace, so make sure you keep your card in a safe place at all times. Not only do you face fees, you’ll also lose access to your funds during the processing time.

Online Security

If you are making payments to vendors such as your utility companies, mortgage lenders, or loan providers, be very careful about your online security measures. While most banks and legitimate vendors will have established a thoroughly secure system for accepting payments online, you must make sure your own computer is safe. It is not advisable to store passwords online or on your mobile phone because of the potential for identity theft.

Card Rules

Federal assistance programs and refunds issued through debit cards may also come with special use rules that you need to understand. There may be limitations to what you can use the card for, and you need to be prepared to follow such rules. For instance, government programs such as food assistance programs will only allow for certain purchases to be made on the card. You may also only be able to use your card for a certain amount of transactions within a month’s time period.

Back the Truck Up: How to Avoid Car Repair Rip-Offs

The colder temperatures and inclement weather may signal the need for a checkup at the mechanic shop. Auto repair shops are infamous for overcharging customers who don’t know any better and only want their vehicles to operate reliably and safely. (See also: Safety Tips for Holiday Driving.)

While not all shops deserve a bad reputation, there are quite a few with a history of taking people for more money than necessary. Just recently, my 2004 Kia acquired a hole in the exhaust system. The noise coming from the car resembled a loud motorcycle, and I was embarrassed every time I turned on the ignition. We finally had to break down and visit the repair shop for an estimate. We were told after a brief "look-see-listen" that the part alone would be close to $1,000 and with labor, we may face a bill of $1,300 or more. We made a scheduled appointment to bring the car back, and in the meantime consulted with a mechanic friend. He told us he thought he could repair the part rather than replace it, and eventually we only had to pay a total of $124 for the weld job. Thank goodness we had someone on our side.

While not every mechanic is out to intentionally swindle a customer, there are still some precautionary measures one should take when dealing with auto repair companies in order to save money. Here are some tips to prevent being overcharged, underserviced, and scared into services you don’t even need.

Find Reputable Shops

You want to select a mechanic shop that is licensed in the state and certified by the ASE or AAA. Get referrals from friends and family too.

Check It Out

When you get to the shop, check out the condition of the equipment in the garage, and how the garage looks in general. An outdated, unkempt garage may be a red flag for the competency and expectations of the shop. If you come across a shop owner who says he doesn't need the latest equipment to get the job done, you might want to consider finding someone else to do the work.

Refuse to Sign Blank Documents

For any type of work you plan on having done, make sure you only sign off on work orders that have specific job instructions and price estimates. Any work outside the scope of the original order should have to go through you first. Never sign any forms that are blank or that don’t contain pertinent information.

Don’t Fall for Dramatics

If you are told by the mechanic that essentially your car is on its last leg when you are pretty sure the problem is only minor, you should reconsider your choice in mechanics. If you are not mechanically savvy, find a friend who can accompany you to the appointment to make it less likely you’ll get suckered into paying for services your vehicle doesn’t need. Some unprofessional individuals will use scare tactics and "family safety" points to hook you for more services and money.

For Big Jobs, Consult with the Dealer

If you find that something major is wrong with your vehicle such as the emission system, it is a good idea to check back at the place you purchased the vehicle to find out about the warranty. Some parts of vehicles' major systems are covered by long warranties, and in some cases, part replacement is required by law to be free.

Get a Second Opinion

After you have received a rough idea of how much it will cost to get your vehicle fully operational, it never hurts to get a second opinion. If you do seek another’s advice, make sure to keep your lips zipped about your previous estimates and work order. You never want to influence your back-up opinion provider.

How to Winterize Your Home for Maximum Savings

The heat of summer is fading fast and fall temps may be prompting some around the country to start turning up the thermostat. With the rising costs of living already hampering many families, the added costs of heating oil and electricity will prove to be a real burden over the long, cold winter months.

In order to save money on winter heating costs, it is essential you start preparing your home to battle to cold before it takes hold. Most of the winterizing steps you need to take are relatively easy, do-it-yourself tasks that will not cost you as much as heating your home will. With initiative and some time, you can ensure big savings.

Low Cost/Simple Tasks

Here are some cheap and easy tips for winterizing against Old Man Winter:

Check windows and doors

Check the weather-stripping around all of your doors and windows, including those in the basement and attic, as they may deteriorate over time and due to the elements. Replacements are not expensive and can make a big difference in your heating bills. Make a draft catcher pillow out of old clothing or keep a rolled blanket at the base of all doors.

Check pipes and utility holes

Any areas where piping or cable leads to the outside of your home should be checked for drafts. Use a color-coordinated caulking or expandable foam insulation spray to fill in holes and gaps.

Cover permanent AC units

If you have a window unit air conditioner mounted into the wall, purchase a specialized cover or use a quality tarp to cover the outside of the unit. Inside the home, the air conditioner frame should be sealed off with foam insulation.

Inspect storm windows

When the weather is no longer warm enough to keep the windows open, check all glass storm windows for cracks or other damage and make sure they are tightly closed.

Shut off unused rooms

If you can control heat in rooms you do not use, turn heat on low and make sure all doors remain shut to prevent wasting heat.

Adjust the thermometer

During the day when no one is in and the sun is heating the exterior of your home, keep the thermostat low; only turn it up during the evening hours to keep the dampness and chill out of the air. Wear layered clothing and use blankets when hanging out at home. Leave blinds and curtains open during the sunlight hours and close them tight at night.

Hire professional cleaning

Having your furnace checked by a professional is not optional. For the safety of your family, you need to check your heating system before the start of each fall/winter season. Also have chimneys, fireplaces, and other supplemental heat sources checked for problems. A professional cleaning will cost a few hundred dollars but if you take the initiative to learn how to do it yourself, you can save the cash for something else. Ask a relative who is handy with home repairs or hang out with the pro on the next visit and learn what you have to do. Home improvement stores like Lowe's often sponsor classes in home improvement, so check in with your local store to find out more.

Bigger Jobs to Start Saving For

You may not have the cash to do a total home makeover before winter hits, but it is smart to be aware of the bigger jobs that need attention and start saving now. Over time, homes will all need more attention and simple tasks will no longer be enough to make your home heat efficient.

Here are some of the bigger things you need to consider:

Replace drafty windows

If most of your home's windows are old and drafty, it would be smart to invest the cash to replace them all at the same time. If you can't afford to redo all windows, start with those located in the most frequently used rooms like bedrooms, living room, and kitchen. Check with your local government offices and ask if there are any rebate programs or assistance for replacing windows and making your home more energy efficient. Also, check in with the IRS to learn more about energy-efficient tax credits.

Upgrade insulation

If you have an older home, you may have some insulation but not enough to sufficiently keep the heat inside. Fully insulating your home will not only save you money over the long haul, it will also improve the value of your home if you choose to sell down the road. Contact several home improvement contractors now and request a free estimate. Compare prices and work being completed. You'll have a financial goal to work towards during the next year and it will help you make the work a priority.

Invest in solar panels

Go a little green by investing in some solar panels which uses the sun as a heat source. Find a reputable contractor that works with solar panels and request free estimates so you'll know if it's financially an option for your home.

4 Places to Start Your Debt Management Crusade

Even though much of the country has been working hard to bounce back in the last year, you may only now be realizing your struggle with debt. Whether an unexpected situation prompted your newfound concerns about debt or it's a problem you have been denying for a while, there is no time like the present to get your finances back on track.

You don't have to be behind on bills to be struggling with debt. If your income is not stretching as far as it once did and you're having trouble living from paycheck to paycheck, it's time to start some financial self-analysis. Start by revising your financial strategies in these four areas. (See also: How Much Does Your Credit Card Debt Cost You?)

Credit Card Debts

Credit card rules have been changing and the minimums mean nothing anymore. If you are only making minimum payments on two or more credit cards each month, you are adding to your debt woes over the long term. There are several ways to approach credit card debt, including:

Start small

Pay off small balances to get rid of the carry-over balances. Start with the card with the lowest balance and keep moving on to the next one while continuing to pay minimums on the other cards. Some people prefer to do it the other way around, focusing primarily on the card with the highest interest rate. Whichever method works for your financial situation will help you eliminate credit card debts faster.

Consolidate

If your credit is still decent, you may be able to procure a low-interest balance transfer card. You can transfer high-interest card balances to one card, eliminating multiple payments each month, allowing you to make one larger payment. However, you must ensure you have a plan to pay off the total balance before the promotional period ends and the low-interest rate morphs into a higher, unaffordable rate.

Supplement income

Get a part-time job or second income source and devote all earnings to your credit card debt. The job only has to last as long as your debts do, so if you have the time to spare or a hobby to capitalize on, make the supplemental income work for you.

Vehicle Loan Refinance

If your credit is still good, you may be able to get a lower interest refinance rate on your current car loan. Only use this option if you are sure your credit will fit the criteria. Cutting down on your vehicle loan payments each month can free up some cash to put towards other bills each month. If your vehicle loan is just too much for you to handle, consider trading in or selling for a more reasonable, more affordable vehicle.

Smart Spending

You may not realize how much of your regular spending is based on your "wants" rather than your "needs." Needs are the basic essentials a person or a family requires to survive. This includes food, shelter, clothing, and to some extent transportation. Wants are material items or services you are inclined to have, including a home you can't afford the mortgage on, clothing from the famous label designers, food from high-end restaurants, and luxury vehicles for your work commute. Analyze your spending habits and stop spending on your wants. Set a strict budget for your needs and follow through with it based on living within your means.

Other Consolidation Options

The goal of debt management is eliminate all outstanding debts in an effort to save more cash. If you are struggling but still financially in a position to take out a loan as a way of consolidating all your outstanding bills, it may be the fastest way for you to meet your goal. If a personal consolidation loan is not in the cards for you, consider speaking with your 401k provider about accessing some cash. If you have enough saved in the fund to eliminate all debts, it will be more effective than if only partial debt relief will be achieved. This option should be your last resort and only done after you are certain your employment is secured and you have a plan to pay back the money borrowed.

ShareThis

Written by Tisha Tolar and published on Wise Bread.
Think Twice Before Ditching Your Current Bank

Have you finally had enough with your bank? With so many changes in the banking industry, it is not unusual for many bank customers to get frustrated or even disheartened to see their money being handled in an unfavorable manner. There are thousands of options available to consumers as to where they can place their money, but there are also many considerations that must be taken into account to find the best bank to meet your financial needs.

If you are truly frustrated or even disgusted with the way your current bank is treating you, take a step back and consider the following tips to make sure you are upgrading banks rather than going from one bad apple to another.

What's the Problem?

Digging to the root of your issue with your current bank makes it possible to avoid getting in the same boat with your new bank. Are you unhappy with the rules and restrictions? Does your current bank bleed your account with endless fees? Do you want better rates? By knowing what it is that makes you unhappy in your current bank, you can take the necessary steps to avoid a new bank with the same issues.

Do Your Own Research

The days of banking with one of three banks in your local community are long gone. Today's consumers can choose to bank locally, nationally and online. With so many options, it may become overwhelming deciding which bank is right for you. This doesn't have to be the case.

With a little online research on your part, you can narrow your options quickly. You can compare not only banks, but individual accounts as well as money market accounts, CD and IRA rates, making the process quick and easy. When looking at banks and bank accounts side-by-side, you have the opportunity to see where you can make the most money, save the most money, and access your money with ease and convenience.

Make a Clean Break

Once you have decided on a new bank, it is time to make the switch. A few decades ago, that would be as simple as taking your money from one place to the next. However, in this age of technology a few additional steps are required.

First you must open your new account. You will need this new account information available to set up direct deposit and automated payments. You will want to stop using your old account, but do not close it just yet. Leave some money in the account to cover any outstanding checks or other scheduled withdrawals. Your old account should remain open until all matters concerning the switch are completed. When you have confirmed all credits and debits are now working from your new account and all outstanding checks have cleared, you can then close you old account.

ShareThis

Written by Tisha Tolar and published on Wise Bread.
How to Save Money at the Butcher's

You might be aware of the local butcher shop but hadn't given much thought to ever stopping by to check out what they have to offer. Recently, we moved into a new house that is within walking distance of the local meat shop, one which I have never shopped in before. What I found there was quite surprising. It turned out to be good for my wallet and my freezer. If you opt to buy your meats at the grocery or super store, not only are you missing out on savings, you may be missing out on quality.

Check Price by Pound

When you are price checking between regular packages and that special "family saver" larger package, make sure you are checking out the price per pound and not relying solely on the total price. In some cases, the regular packet is cheaper than the family pack. You can buy multiple packs of the smaller size for less than the supposed family saver packages.

Cut to Order

A butcher shop gives its customers so many more options for meats than just prepackaged, what-you-see-is-what-you-get. For instance, you can save up to $2 a pound on boneless pork chops by purchasing a whole boneless roast. The butcher can then slice the roast into chops suitable for your family dinner. Additionally, butchers can cut out your work time by providing other services like trimming the fat from meats, slicing or grinding meat, and then repackaging it to be freezer-ready — at no additional charge.

Ask for Substitutions

You can find additional savings in the meat shop by deferring to your butcher for recommendations on meat substitutions for your favorite dinners. Often, they can recommend a less expensive cut of meat, an alternative meat, or a new way to prepare a tired dish. For the adventurous, you can also get expert advice on less pricey cuts of meat that do not look appealing to the eye but are more than acceptable for your stomach. You may not know that some of the most flavorful meats are those that you may not normally look at twice.

Know Your Labels

When shopping for meats outside of the butcher shop, make sure you don't look just for designer labels. The only sticker you should concern yourself with besides the price is the tag from the USDA. Look for meats with "Quality Grade" stickers. You should also understand what the other labels mean to your mouth and your wallet. For example, "prime" is the best cut and the most expensive. The next cut is "choice," then "select," followed by "standard."

It is also key to remember that even if a label proclaims the meat to be 100% natural, it is likely that it has still been injected with something unnatural, such as carbon monoxide, to keep the meat from turning brown. Read the ingredients label to see what else is in your meat product.

Choose Fresh

Never go for meats based on price. Grocery stores typically will place the nearly-expired meats at the lowest prices. It is a good choice if you plan on cooking the meats immediately. But if you are looking for the freshest cuts, select the packages furthest from the front and stacked at the bottom of the pile.

A trip to the meat market can be much less expensive and much tastier than what you find in your usual grocery store. Don't be afraid to ask questions for a better idea of how to stock your freezer. Also, inquire about meat packages some butcher sell specifically for the freezer. You can select from several packages that are cut, packaged, and freezer-ready to keep your freezer stocked for all your cooking needs.

Organization is the bane of many families' existence. Most busy families do not have the time or the energy to constantly battle household clutter because with each new day, there is more. Sure, you can box it up and hide it away, but that is just prolonging the problem and not actually finding a solution.
There are tubs and totes and professional organizational décor which you can find at any store or online, but purchasing large quantities to handle the initial clutter can get expensive. You have to first cough up the cash to purchase supplies, then find a proper storage place to hide all the totes and tubs. Plus, you still need to come back and tackle what's stored in the box.

Instead of making more work for yourself, here's an idea that can cost less than $10 per room. You don't even have to make any extra time to accomplish your organizational tasks. The idea is simple. Purchase a sturdy hanging shoe organizer — the kind with several sets of pockets designed to hang inside a closet or on the back of a door. Don't go cheap if you want it to last. You can usually find a good one for around $10. If you are really tight on money, buy just one at a time for each room you need to organize.

Once you have your first hanger, decide an area of your home that needs help. It may not be the best idea to think room-to-room; maybe subdividing different household needs would be more helpful. For instance, take your supply of medicines and first-aid materials. Decide on a good location for easy access (a bathroom closet, kitchen pantry), and hang the shoe organizer. Each time you come across an item related to the category you selected, return it to the hanger rather than its original location. When you need a bandage or an aspirin, take it from the shelf and then store it in a pocket of the organizer. Continue doing the same with all related supplies until the rack is full.

Make a list of other things you'd like to organize. Here are some suggestions.

School and Craft Supplies

Kids are always looking for something they need for school or crafts at home. Storing supplies in an easy-to-access shoe organizer is a great way for little hands to find what they need when they need it. Get really creative by allowing kids to apply stickers or decorate the organizer. By making it more attractive with a personal touch, you can actually display the hanging organizer in public view such as on the bedroom or rec room walls.

Coupons and Samples

Smaller coupon organizers are nice because you can fit them in your purse. However, they are easy to forget or even lose. Use a shoe organizer in an easily accessible place to make it easier to throw in your finds and organize coupons at a later time. It is also a great place to throw free samples that come in the mail which you may not be ready to use right then but will be looking for later. Small items like samples tend to get lost and forgotten just like coupons. Plus, many free sample packs come with a coupon, so you are killing two birds with one organizer.

Beauty Products

You may do your hair in one room and your make up in another and store your perfume in yet another room. It's likely that you have bottles, tubes, cans, and jars all over the house. Use an organizer to keep all your products in a central location, freeing up drawers and cabinets that are overly cluttered. It's also a great way to keep tabs on the items you are running low on and have an abundant supply of so you aren't wasting money on what you think you don't have.

Home Improvement

After a recent move, my husband and I discovered about 26 extension cords and 10 power strips we never knew we had. Keep a hanger in the garage or basement to store little things like electrical cords, plugs, nails, often-used tools, and other items that tend to get lost in the shuffle. You can end up saving a lot of money by not repurchasing what you already own.

Clothing

If you are short on drawer space, you can clear out two drawers with one shoe organizer. Store your underwear, bras, socks, and stockings in the hanger and free up some drawer space in the bedroom.
