Ask the Readers: Who Is Filing Your Taxes This Year?

Editor's Note: Congratulations to Robynn, Allison, and Thomas for winning this week's contest!

Each person's finances is different from the next — and so are our taxes. If your financial situation is simple and straightforward, you can probably file your taxes on your own. If it's a bit more complicated, however, you may be more inclined to hire a professional (or ask your tax-accountant cousin).

Who is filing your taxes this year? Did you go this route last year? If not, what made you decide to change it up?

Tell us who is filing your taxes this year and we'll enter you in a drawing to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!

As a former military member, I always got my taxes done by a discounted tax prep company on base. Now that I am out and newly separated from my husband, I will most likely use H&R Block.

Donna Freedman's picture

I'm having them done at H&R Block Premium, the company that is also handling the taxes for my fledgling LLC.
The enrolled agent who is working with me on the latter has gone way above and beyond in the past year: helping me understand what kind of corporation to become, handling my payroll, writing three letters to clear up an IRS claim that I owed money (I didn't, but would probably have caved and paid it after the second letter if I were doing it myself). He has also held my hand (figuratively speaking!) through some other new-business issues.

I would recommend using a tax software instead of hiring a tax consultant. It's really straight forward if you just think through your expenses throughout the year and any significant capital movements.

I've finally bowed to the inevitable: with a new one on the way and not nearly enough hours in the days, I'm working with a CPA to file our 2014 taxes.

i always take advantage of the free e-file...the IRS offers many options but i like using the same one year after year so my username and password are easy to remember. it's always free (i make so little money, i am way under the maximum income limits) and i have peace of mind. it's easy and any refund gets put automatically into my checking. easy breezy and FREE. and did i mention free? you get my point.

I'm doing my taxes myself this year. I did them myself last year too. I don't have the money to pay someone else to do them. Actually, I'm going to an info session in an hour about how to properly do my taxes because as a grad student, I technically don't earn "wages" so it is confusing as to which part of my stipend is taxable.

I do my own taxes. I've used TurboTax for longest time, but might try some new software this year. Based on what I am seeing on Amazon, H&R Block seems to be the top DIY tax software this year.

We are in our late 40s and have always done our own taxes. My husband and I both have backgrounds in accounting--I minored in it in college whereas he was a finance major with a couple accounting courses--and we still and will always do ours using paper forms/booklets. It is interesting because he works as a financial analyst, and all the guys at work use paper forms! We both find the paper route much more logical and helpful. We know we are dinosaurs but we really prefer the paper!
