ShareThis

Are you hosting the big Thanksgiving dinner this year? If you want to serve a classic menu but only have so much kitchen space, try using your Crock-Pot to do some of the heavy lifting. Here are some essential holiday recipes — all adapted for your slow cooker.

1. Mashed Potatoes

Making mashed potatoes is easy with this genius Crock-Pot method. You'll need two pounds of red potatoes, sour cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Spritz the inside of your pot with cooking spray. Then cube potatoes and put them into the pot. Cook for two to three hours on high. Add the rest of your ingredients and blend using a hand mixer.

2. Green Bean Casserole

My mother-in-law always has a green bean casserole on the Thanksgiving table. To make it in the slow cooker, you'll need three cans of cream of mushroom soup, milk, black pepper, onion powder, green beans, and French fried onions. Fold together all the ingredients (save some of the fried onions for topping) and cook for two to three hours on high. Add the rest of your fried onions before transferring to the oven to brown.

3. Sweet Potato Casserole

This sweet potato casserole takes just 20 minutes of preparation and serves 14 people. You'll start by microwaving brown sugar, butter, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract together. Then add this sauce to your pot with cubed sweet potatoes and mix well. Cook for three to four hours before adding mini marshmallows to finish off the dish.

4. Glazed Carrots

Don't forget the glazed carrots. This Crock-Pot variety is made with honey and orange flavors. You'll need two to three pounds of baby carrots, orange juice, honey, butter, and salt. Put everything into your pot and cook for six to eight hours on low. Add orange zest for extra zing.

5. Cranberry Sauce

Skip the can this year and simmer together some homemade cranberry sauce in your slow cooker. You'll combine fresh cranberries with orange juice, water, sugar, and maybe a splash of bourbon. Cook on high for three to four hours. The sauce thickens as it cools.

6. Cornbread

This Crock-Pot cornbread makes a great, hearty side dish. Dump some cornbread mix, eggs, butter, sour cream, and creamed corn into your pot. Mix well and cook for three or more hours on high. You should smell when the bread is done. Check the center to make sure a toothpick comes out clean.

7. Vegan Stuffing

Free up space in the oven with this vegan stuffing in your slow cooker. Mushrooms give this recipe some earthy flavor and a mix of sage, thyme, and marjoram add even more savory notes. Toss all the ingredients to you pot, then add enough vegetable broth to moisten. Cook for 45 minutes on high, and another three to four until done.

8. Classic Stuffing

Create the classic stuffing of your dreams with this tasty Crock-Pot recipe. You'll quickly sauté celery, onions, and mushrooms with parsley on your stove before putting it in the pot. Then combine with bread cubes, chicken stock, eggs, and different seasonings. Cook for 45 minutes on high before switching heat to low for another four hours.

9. Turkey

Yes! You can even cook the Thanksgiving turkey in your slow cooker! Of course, you'll first need to find a turkey that will fit. Let it thaw and put a bit of water into the bottom of the pot. Let it cook for seven to eight hours on low before seasoning however you like. Turkey is done when the internal temperature of the breast or thigh reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

10. Apple Brown Betty

I don't know if anyone else eats an apple Brown Betty for the holiday — but we do, and it's delicious. Toss six cups of sliced apples into a large bowl with sugar, flour, cinnamon, and lemon zest. In another bowl, combine melted butter and bread cubes. Then layer the apple and bread mixtures in your Crock-Pot a few times and cook for four hours on high.

11. Pumpkin Pie

No time to make dessert this year? Try making pumpkin pie right in your slow cooker! You'll need a can of pumpkin puree, evaporated milk, cream soda, vanilla extract, brown sugar, eggs, butter, and pumpkin pie spice. Mix it all together with some Bisquick. You'll top with even more Bisquick before cooking for six to seven hours on low until crust is golden brown.

What are your plans for your slow cooker this year?
